When Skin & Nutrition Meld
I have never had any major skin problems. Other family members ranging from their early teens to 20s, unfortunately, have had to deal with some woeful skin conditions. A sister grappled with pimples while a teenage son remains acne-prone, requiring regular visits to a dermatologist and. I do not use any high quality skin care product; nor do I go for facials but adhere to skin care basics like regularly cleansing my face before sleeping. I have been spared from many skin woes and I attribute it to being a fruit eater, and being always on the go or walking (exercise is said to be helpful to skin).
Lately, though, my face has been looking dry even though I keep slathering it with moisturizer. I attribute my skin changes to age, work & stress – a tandem which has lately been affecting my sleep, environmental pollutants, and to some extent, junk food consumption at the nearest fast-food store during many time-constrained moments.
Some expensive quality creams and lotions may help soften skin, no doubt, but what many people overlook is that skin & nutrition go hand in hand. Neglect your body’s nutrient requirements and it manifests in your skin texture and tone. The best skin rejuvenation treatments are useful if you do not feed your skin – or load up on important nutrients like vitamin C found mostly from super foods like oranges and other citrus fruits, tomatoes, and blueberries. The latter packs a wallop as far as providing essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, potassium, iron, and dietary fiber is concerned. All these nutrients are essential to counteracting common skin conditions while bolstering the body’s overall functioning.
Skin care 101, or the basics of taking care of your skin, must start with working from within. This means proper nutrition which may include eating a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables (excellent skin-enhancing and anti-aging foods). Go for fiber-laden foods like are cauliflower and broccoli. Snackers may opt for high-fiber foodstuff like nuts, dates, figs, raisins, and seeds. Have regular servings of whole grain breads, cereals, crackers or pasta; and calcium-rich foods like fat-free milk; and a nourishing variety of lean meats, poultry and fish laden with omega fatty acids. Eating fish can be a boon to your complexion. The natural oils in fish will go the extra mile not only in feeding moisture to your skin, but in fortifying other organs of your body.
To keep skin soft, healthy, and far from showing signs of premature aging, you may want to consider some equations like skin + antioxidants = skin health. Always take into consideration how skin & nutrition must work hand in hand to keep skin strong and elastic.
Aside from vitamin C-rich oranges and berries, other super foods that can fight free radicals which trigger skin conditions like dry skin, wrinkles, lines, inflammation are carrots and papaya. Beta-carotene-rich carrots contain powerful antioxidants that counter the effects of free radicals. Carrots also help in aids in the creation of collagen that makes skin look young and plump. Papaya, on the other hand sloughs off dead skin cells. It has been shown to be capable of rejuvenating and healing certain skin conditions.
